| The City of Richmond Department of Public Utilities (DPU) works around the clock to provide natural gas, water, wastewater, streetlighting, and stormwater services to the more than 500,000 residential and commercial customers in the metropolitan region.
DPU is the eighth largest out of 940 municipally-owned natural gas utilities in the country, maintaining more than 1,700 miles of gas mains throughout Richmond, Henrico County and northern Chesterfield County.

One of largest water producers in Virginia, DPU maintains a modern water treatment plant that can treat up to 132 million gallons of water a day. The wastewater treatment plant is the largest of its kind in Virginia and treats up to 70 million gallons a day of sanitary sewage and stormwater before returning it to the James River.
