Urban Forestry

Public Works' Urban Forestry Division maintains the more than 150,000 City-owned trees of more than 100 species that provide shade, greenery, and character to our neighborhoods, streets, and parks.

The most common services provided by Urban Forestry include removal of dead trees and pruning when limbs are dead or posing a hazard. A tree inspection may be requested by calling the City's Customer Care Center at 311. Generally, we can respond with an inspection within ten working days. What services may be provided - either by City crews or a contractor - and the time required to provide them will depend on the situation and how it ranks against other requests based on demand and severity.

The Urban Forestry Division also assists with community education regarding tree care, including speaking to neighborhood groups, conducting tree identification walks, and working with the City Tree Stewards through the Parks and Recreation Foundation.

Adopt A Tree Program

Residents may participate in the Adopt-A-Tree Program by making a tax-deductible contribution to the Parks & Recreation Foundation which will go toward planting a new tree or trees. Additionally, participants agree to water the tree for the first two years as outlined in the Tree Maintenance Agreement. Applications are due by October 1. Trees are planted late November through the end of February. For additional information please refer to Frequently Asked Questions and the Approved Tree Planting List.

Permits for maintenance or removal of City trees are issued by the Urban Forestry Division in certain cases free of charge. A tree inspection may be requested by calling the City’s Customer Care Center at 3-1-1.
