PERMIT TITLE: Liquefied Petroleum Gases

CODE SECTION:(Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code) 6101.2

FEE: $115.00 (Check payable to the City of Richmond)

SCOPE: A permit is required to store or use liquefied petroleum gases. (No permit for the transportation in cargo tanker or for individual containers of 500 gallons or less for one or two family homes).

PERMIT EXPIRATION: ONE (1) year from date issued.

REQUIREMENTS: Permit holder agrees to abide by the Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code, NFPA 58, and any special stipulations noted on permit, as well as the following:

  1. Properly mark all containers and post “No Smoking” signs nearby.
  2. MSDS and site/floor plan (noting locations of LPG, if other hazardous materials or items/area of special concern, safety systems and controls) and emergency plan (including emergency contacts) readily available on site and current copy filed with fire official.
  3. Containers, piping, valves and other appurtenances shall be protected from damage and tampering; appropriately marked as to contents and function.
  4. Keep containers over 10 feet from air intakes, building exits or combustible materials and over 20 feet from motor vehicle fuel-dispenser.
  5. Do not refill portable containers lacking an overflow protection device (per NFPA 58).
  6. Promptly remove, replace, or repair leaking, damaged, or corroded containers or systems. Treat containers as if containing flammable gas until test verifies non-hazardous. Coordinate purging to atmosphere or removal of stationary tanks with this office.
  7. Inspect DOT cylinders refilled on site one year after manufactured and every 5 years.
  8. Have at least a 4A-40B: C rated portable fire extinguisher between 15 to 30 feet away.
  9. No storage of containers in basement, roofs or where concerns for open gas collection.
  10. LPG transport vehicles shall not be left unattended beyond approved areas.
