Love Your Block

About

In January 2012, the City of Richmond’s Neighbor-To-Neighbor(N2N) Initiative was awarded a $10,000 grant from Service Nation, in partnership with the Home Depot Foundation, in the form of Home- Depot gift cards toward the implementation of a Love Your Block Program. Love Your Block is a tested, high-impact service strategy in which the Mayor’s office engages with community members in revitalizing their neighborhoods one block at a time. It aligns perfectly with three elements of our city’s Balanced Scorecard: Unique and Inclusive Communities, Community Safety, and Well-Being Sustainability and the Natural Environment.

The strategy that the City of Richmond will use includes: (1) taking a holistic, city-wide approach by targeting each of the city’s nine council districts for improvement, (2) promoting neighborhood buy-in from residents before potential projects are finalized and (3) creating partnerships to make sure that Love Your Block can continue after the initial grant period. By way of conversations and collaborations with Council members, neighborhood civic associations and key non-profits, N2N’s goal is that multiple communities across the City’s nine districts will have the opportunity to share and leverage strategic projects to “Build the Best Richmond” one block at a time.

By way of the LYB grant, N2N will provide competitive mini-grants up to $500.00 (in the form of Home Depot Gift Cards) to neighborhood groups for the purchase of supplies needed for their local projects. N2N will also help connect LYB projects with City government services (as available) to support the efforts. LYB grants encourage community groups to identify priority projects and develop volunteer-fueled solutions in the following ways:

  1. Improve resident perception of safety, with improved lighting, landscaping etc.
  2. Reduce crime incidents and other gang/drug related vandalism with graffiti removal, and community garden initiatives.
  3. Reduce trash through street cleanups/increase recycling.

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis with awards being reviewed following these deadlines:
