Given Sheriff Woody's commitment to leveraging technology to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Richmond City Sheriff's Office (RCSO), the Information Technology (RSO-DIT) office is actively seeking new ways to enhance technical functions of the organization.

With the recent creation and use of the Richmond City Justice Center, Sheriff Woody's team has leveraged state of the art technological infrastructure with the latest in networking, communications and multimedia resources. The Richmond City Justice Center (RCJC) has become heralded as one of the leading facilities in corrections and as such it is outfitted with the latest and greatest in technology - which the Department of Information Technology helped put in place and continues to support.

"After 9/11 we saw how vital it is to have interoperability for communications and technology systems. Now, a key component in Richmond's public safety equation is in place and we can be more prepared if and when the need arises." RCJC features representatives from all facets from Richmond's justice field (Richmond Police Department, Richmond Probation & Parole, Richmond Magistrates Office and other Law Enforcement agencies located in the city), which are all tied together with modern IP based communications.

Sheriff Woody continued, "We commit over 20,000 people into the Richmond City Jail, and we collect data from thousands more with whom we come into contact each year. Now, this vast amount of information will be available to partnering public safety agencies, as theirs will be to us."

System Functions

The creation of the RCJC also included the creation of a new data center, which features a state of the art Storage Area Network and multiple virtual based servers, which will enable the Richmond City Sheriff's Office to collect and maintain data on both jail residents and those coming into contact with the Sheriff's Office. These new systems will not only improve record keeping, it will also improve the safety of jail staff, jail residents and the public.

  • Virtualization and upgrade of server system
  • Implementation of network based storage, with markedly increased capacity
  • Modern multimedia resources featured in training facilities

The RSO-DIT office touches and supports all parts of the Sheriff's Office featuring:

  • A centralized DIT Help Desk, which is staffed during all office hours
  • A systems development team, creating applications for various functions and offices within the organization
  • Communications and Networking support, providing modern IP-based networks
  • Multimedia resource support and planning
  • Web development and support
  • Desktop publishing and distribution
