Construction of Fire Station 17 Photo

The overall purpose of this project is to build a new fire station in order for the Richmond Department of Fire and Emergency Services to enhance its response capability and protect the City of Richmond from fire and other hazards. The project will replace Fire Station 17 currently located at 2901 Bainbridge Street in the South Side of Richmond. This station was built in 1917 to accommodate horse-drawn firefighting equipment. The new station will be located at Semmes Avenue and 22nd Street, adjacent to Canoe Run Park.

Final building construction plans have been completed. Groundbreaking occurred on August 2, 2011. The General contractor was given a notice to proceed with an effective date of August 8, 2011. The new 3 bay, single story firehouse will have 11,351 sq ft of operational space. This LEED Silver facility will reduce water use by 35%, improve energy efficiency by 24% and recycle 75% of the construction waste. Construction of the project is underway with an estimated completion date of September 2012.
