Councilwoman McQuinn supported these initiatives for Seventh District constituents:
- 25th Street business corridor improvement project to facilitate the commercial development
along 25th Street and Nine Mile Road
- 25th Street area rezoning to remove non-conforming uses and encourage private development of
commercial spaces
- Ornamental lights installed on N. 25th Street between Nine Mile Road and M Street;
trees and brick crosswalks placed on 25th Street from Fairmont Avenue to M Street
- Assisted in bringing the following new businesses to the East District: The Market; CVS; Family Dollar;
Church Hill Animal Hospital; Robert L. Taylor Child Care Center; Photography Studio (Jefferson Avenue); DaVinci’s Pizza
- $3.6 million in housing rehabilitation and new construction and $307,000 in capital
improvements in Church Hill Central "Neighborhoods in Bloom" area
- Special events: Homebuyer Education/Renovation Lending Workshops, Church Hill "Sell-a-Bration"
and "Live Where You Work" Workshops
- Inventory completed of Chimborazo/Oakwood properties for Virginia Historic District nomination
- Streetlights added and other lighting infrastructure improvements made to address
safety and citizens’ requests
- Streetscape improvements for 700-800 block of N. 26th and 27th streets; Tobacco Row
streetscape along Main Street from 23rd to 24th streets
- Ongoing projects include: Tobacco Row streetscapes along Cary and 23rd streets, Intermediate terminal dock
improvements, Admiral Gravely Boulevard drainage improvements, E. Broad Street gateway streetscape,
and Route 5 rerouting
- $250,000 planning funds allocated to develop a teen center
- Scholarships for youth to participate in the East District’s Teen Education, Empowerment and
Nurturance summer program
- Hundreds of East End households contacted in Phase I of door-to-door City volunteer
outreach effort to enroll lower-income, uninsured children in state health care programs
- $11,000 in heating assistance provided to 55 district households from the City’s MetroCare program
- Annual Community Events—Back to School Parade and Rally, Easter Celebration, and 25th Street
Grand Illumination
- Homebuyer Education/Renovation Lending Workshops held monthly to encourage home
ownership and lender investment
- Community Health Fairs sponsored by the East District Initiative (EDI) and
Bon Secours to provide health screenings for East District residents, particularly seniors
- Partnership with AARP to make East District lighting and sidewalks more “pedestrian friendly” for active seniors
- Oakwood Park fitness area created for young and old to lead healthier and more active lifestyles
