Communication officers are the link to all emergency and non-emergency services and lifeline for citizens in need, firefighters and law enforcement. No experience is required, and the pay starts at $16.35 per hour with full City of Richmond benefits.

Follow these steps to become a communication officer with the Richmond Department of Emergency Communications:

  1. Complete and submit an application at
  2. Attend a pre-employment hiring event, where you will undergo:
    • Preliminary background check
    • CritiCall® testing
    • Panel interview
  3. Upon successful completion of the hiring event, you will undergo:
    • Investigation interview
    • Record check
    • Polygraph test
    • Reference checks
    • Fingerprinting
    • Psychological evaluation
    • Drug Screen
