Chinese health exercise offered Free by Richmond Parks and Recreation Department
Newcomers are invited to join free Taiji Walking Qigong ("chee gung") classes for adults. Sponsored by the City of Richmond Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities Department and led by experienced practitioners, the groups meet on an ongoing basis (see class schedule below).
These gentle, easy-to-learn exercises involve special walking and breathing and have a powerful impact on stress level, balance and well being. The Chinese have been using various forms of qigong as a daily practice for centuries for health maintenance and recovery from chronic disease.
Developed by Chinese qigong master Guo Lin, Taiji Walking Qigong combines special walking movements, breathing, hand movements and meditation. In China, hospitals, clinics and rehabilitation clubs have used this type of qigong for years to help thousands recover from cancer, high blood pressure and other chronic diseases. For both the ill and those with no manifestation of disease, these "internal" exercises are used to increase and balance the circulation of energy, blood and the nervous and lymph systems, improving immune system function and reducing stress. The classes meet:
Tuesdays, 9:30 to 10:30 am
Byrd Park Roundhouse (in good weather, the group exercises outside)
