Permits and Inspections Bureau
The
Bureau of Permits and Inspections provides a wide range of services related to
construction activities. Services include the comprehensive review of all plans
to ensure compliance with building codes, and the issuance of
building, mechanical,
electrical, plumbing,
elevator, demolition
permits. The bureau does the inspections required in the permitting process. It
also provides staff support to the various Building Code Appeals Boards.
The bureau’s four functional areas or divisions; Zoning, Property
Maintenance, Permits & Engineering Service (Site Plan Review), and New
Construction Permitting and Inspection:

Housing Maintenance Code-Provides assistance to citizens through investigation
of violations of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code, Volume II, which
pertains only to existing structures. Call (840)646-6419 to reach this office.

Boarding and Demolition-Provides resources to reduce the number of vacant and
abandoned buildings which cause blighting influences in neighborhoods. Provides
for the boarding of vacant structures.

Environmental Code Enforcement – Provides assistance to citizens through
investigation of unkempt yards, high weeds and grass, junk cars, abandoned

Reviews and inspects site plans to ensure compliance with Federal Emergency
Management Administration (FEMA) flood regulations, wetland approvals, erosion
and sedimentation control ordinances, and the Chesapeake Bay regulations.
Issues other construction related permits such as 'Work in Streets and Alleys',
sewer connections, encroachments, etc. Call (804)646-6440 to reach this office.
The hours of operation for the Permits & Inspections Bureau are Monday through Friday, 8:00am until 5:00pm.
