Permit Holder Guideline #13
PERMIT TITLE: Welding and Cutting
CODE SECTION (2003 Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code): 2601.2
SCOPE: A permit is required to conduct cutting and welding operations within the City Of Richmond. Procedures for Gas, Electric Arc or Flammable Liquid Cutting and Welding
are covered in these procedures.
FEE: $40.00 (Check payable to the City of Richmond)
PERMIT EXPIRATION: ONE (1) year from date issued.
REQUIREMENTS: Permit holder agrees to abide by the Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code and any special stipulations noted on permit, as well as the following:
1. A current certificate of insurance shall be on file in the Fire Marshal's office.
2. Written company procedures to outline any cutting and welding operation shall be approved by the Fire Marshal and be available for review at each job site.
3. Only qualified operators, using approved equipment, shall perform cutting and welding operations. The type of equipment being used for operations is to be noted on the permit.
4. Hot work areas shall not contain combustibles or shall be provided with appropriate shielding to prevent sparks, slag or heat from igniting exposed combustibles.
5. Combustibles within 35 feet of the welding or cutting operation must be protected by an approved method.
7. A fire-watch shall be provided and remain on the job at least 1 hour after cutting or welding operations has been completed to insure that no fire exists.
8. A 2-A: 20-BC extinguisher shall be kept within 30 feet of cutting and welding operations.
9. A copy of the permanent permit shall be on each job site for review, and a list of all job sites to be maintained by the operator.
