In addition to the literally hundreds of services it provides to residents and
businesses throughout Richmond, General Services plays an important support role in
providing critical internal services to its sister departments. Some of the major
service areas are listed below:
Buildings Management
General Services' Buildings Management Division is responsible for care and
upkeep of all City facilities, including City Hall, Police headquarters,
and various operations facilities. Our architectural unit also provides
design and space usage consulting to all City departments and various
agencies, has managed major projects such as construction of the Greater
Richmond Convention Center and improvements to the Richmond Coliseum,
and has overseen many historic renovations of City-owned property including
the Landmark Theater and Main Street Station.
Fleet Management
From fire trucks and police cars to refuse collection trucks and street
sweepers, General Services' Fleet Management Division maintains the City's
fleet of vehicles, now totaling more than 2,700 vehicles. Each month,
approximately 1,200 maintenance work orders are completed to ensure maximum
safety and life of each vehicle. Our operations are Automotive Service
Excellence (ASE)-certified, and we place a high emphasis on preventative
maintenance.
Administrative Operations
General Services maintains its own business support operation, including capital
and operating budget administration, accounts payable and receivable,
and human resources management.
