In addition to the literally hundreds of services it provides to residents and businesses throughout Richmond, General Services plays an important support role in providing critical internal services to its sister departments. Some of the major service areas are listed below:

Buildings Management

General Services' Buildings Management Division is responsible for care and upkeep of all City facilities, including City Hall, Police headquarters, and various operations facilities. Our architectural unit also provides design and space usage consulting to all City departments and various agencies, has managed major projects such as construction of the Greater Richmond Convention Center and improvements to the Richmond Coliseum, and has overseen many historic renovations of City-owned property including the Landmark Theater and Main Street Station.

Fleet Management

From fire trucks and police cars to refuse collection trucks and street sweepers, General Services' Fleet Management Division maintains the City's fleet of vehicles, now totaling more than 2,700 vehicles. Each month, approximately 1,200 maintenance work orders are completed to ensure maximum safety and life of each vehicle. Our operations are Automotive Service Excellence (ASE)-certified, and we place a high emphasis on preventative maintenance.

Administrative Operations

General Services maintains its own business support operation, including capital and operating budget administration, accounts payable and receivable, and human resources management.
