The City of Richmond is dedicated to creating opportunities for growth and development of today’s students by offering internship opportunities to college and university students. The College Internship Program (CIP) intends to create a professional environment by which college-level students can gain meaningful work experience as they prepare for the workforce. Detailed information about the program is listed below please review the following topics and if you are interested in becoming an intern for the City of Richmond, fill out the intern application and submit to the address listed on the form. PHILOSOPHY

The City of Richmond is an "Employer of Choice." We are a destination point for small and large businesses, international and national visitors, and a model of hospitality and vitality in the world. GUIDING PRINCIPLES

The City of Richmond has embraced a set of core values that are expected to guide the Interns' experiences during their time spent with the City. Those values are:

  • Employee Ownership: A commitment to, and an understanding of the link between one's work and the department's and the City's strategic goals.
  • Positive Outlook: A way of working to meet or exceed performance despite obstacles.
  • Technical Skills: The application of knowledge, judgment and skills to accomplish one's job effectively and efficiently.
  • Leadership: Creating a positive environment through influencing others to reach the department's and the City's strategic direction.
ABOUT THE INTERN PARTNERSHIP
  • Interns work under the direction of a designated City of Richmond leader performing specific and general job duties that prepares them successfully to enter the workforce upon graduation.
    1. Internships with the City are offered to meet the needs of students and the demands of the City. Many departments employ interns in a year-round status. Year-round positions are usually part-time positions consisting of a 10-20 hour workweek. Other internship positions are seasonal and those positions are offered in the summer on a full-time basis, 30-40 hours and give students a greater sense of a real world experience.
  • Interns' Salary:
    1. Undergraduate - $9.90 hourly.
    2. Graduate - $10.90 hourly.
    3. Doctorate - $15.00 hourly.
    4. Engineering & Information Systems students are paid a special hourly rate depending on experience.
  • Interns are hourly paid employees in temporary positions and are eligible for benefits of temporary employees (holidays, pro-rated sick leave, civil leave, funeral leave and military leave).
INTERN ELIGIBILITY

To be classified as an Intern in this program, each of the following criteria must be met:
  • The student must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program, be in good academic standing (as defined below), and be registered for courses during the internship period. Summer Interns do not have to be enrolled in summer school, but must be enrolled for the upcoming Fall semester.
  • After graduating from a degree program, the student no longer qualifies for an internship with this program unless they intend to enter into another degree program as evidenced by current enrollment records.
  • Students must complete and submit a Student Internship Application to the Human Resources Department Intern Coordinator, In addition, an official college transcript and approval from the Academic Advisor or a Career Development Counselor must be submitted with the application.
  • Students must be lawfully authorized to work in the United States and are required to present proof of such eligibility prior to beginning work.
  • Undergraduate students must have completed the freshman year and have a 2.0 overall grade point average.
  • Graduate students must have completed 6 credit hours and have a 3.0 overall grade point average.

Please follow all instructions on the application in detail. A complete and accurate application is necessary and interviews will not be granted unless a completed application and an official college transcript are on file.
  • Applications are accepted for available positions only.
  • Resumes will not be accepted in lieu of completed applications, but may be included for supplemental information.
  • A separate application and a current, official college transcript must be submitted for each position. Mail these documents to the address shown on the first page of the application.
  • Applications are accepted Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., except holidays, and must be received by the end of the business day on the closing date indicated for each position.
  • Applications that are received unsigned, incomplete, or after the closing date will not be processed.
  • Applicants who do not meet the minimum requirements for the position will not be considered for employment.
  • Applications, resumes, transcripts, letters of reference, and other information submitted will become the property of the City and cannot be returned.
STEPS IN THE APPLICATION PROCESS
  • Applicant reviews internship requirements and determines for which position(s) to apply.
  • Applicant submits completed application and current official college transcript to the City of Richmond.
  • The HR Department Intern Coordinator evaluates the applications and refers eligible applicants to the Intern Coordinator in the Department.
  • Applicants are notified regarding the status of their application.
  • Interviews are set up and conducted by the Department's designated Intern Coordinator.
  • The candidate is selected.
  • Physical examinations are required for all City of Richmond positions. As a part of this examination, the Intern is required to pass a substance abuse test (drug screening) prior to actual employment.
  • The candidate is hired contingent upon all requested information received by the HR Department’s Intern Coordinator. The hiring department's Intern Coordinator or mentor notifies all other candidates interviewed in writing of the selection decision.
REPORTING TO WORK
  • On the first day, departments will assign all interns a mentor to help them get acclimated to the environment and review the vision of the City, the department, explain the structure and specific and general job duties. Mentors will discuss expectations and discuss the expected standards of performance written on the Internship Partnership Performance Evaluation. Performance goals are set for all mentors during the first week and reviews are given after six weeks of employment.
  • The Internship is designed as a mutual agreement. The department and the intern will come up with a plan that will encompass what the intern wants to experience and learn while meeting the needs of the department.
  • The Internship Program Coordinator will schedule the Intern to attend an orientation to the City and a session on Customer Service.
RETURNING INTERNS

Interns who are returning for another semester must have the Academic Advisor or Counselor complete the Educational Update Sheet. Interns are required to pass a substance abuse test (drug screening) prior to returning after an absence of more than 30 consecutive days. Note: Under special circumstances the HR Department may adjust Department and/or Intern requirements on a case-by-case basis.
