Mission Statement:
To create opportunities that assist youth in developing skills to become responsible citizens and leaders by providing avenues to discover their ultimate potential.
Components and Age Requirement
The program consists of three components: first, health and wellness; second, athletics; and third, educational and cultural. The majority of programs are offered to youth between ages 7 and 17. However, some programs are age specific. All programs are conducted at neighborhood community centers where weekly clubs have been established. The program works in partnership with the American Red Cross, Richmond Junior League, Virginia Cooperative Extension Service, Planned Parenthood, and other agencies. Listed below are some of the course offerings:
Health & Nutrition - This course is designed to teach knowledge of nutrition, food-preparation skills, and to encourage youth and their families to adopt healthy eating habits.
Respecting Your Future - This course is designed for pre-teens. It will provide the knowledge, motivation and skills necessary to change behaviors in ways that will reduce the risk of contracting STD’s.
Real Talk - The course involves a series of learning activities, such as short culturally sensitive trigger videos, group discussions, and role-playing. Participants will practice negotiation and refusal skills. These interactive sessions incorporate handouts and supplemental information. Additionally, Planned Parenthood will provide a family clinic.
Healthy Women - A program for women to learn in a safe and structured environment about the same topics offered in Real Talk. The purpose of Healthy Women is to give mothers and guardians of teenagers the skills needed to educate and empower their children at home.
The Poetry Project - will introduce students to the fundamentals of poetry by showing how poetry occurs in their own experiences. They will discuss rhythm and form.
The Go Girl Go Project - includes 15 sessions, each of which feature a champion female athletes story and accompanying educational information and activities.
Tea For You - This program will bring you the history of tea, a time of beauty, elegance and charm. Special Occasions & Formal/Informal Tea.
