No matter where you are in Richmond, you're never far from one of the many City parks. Each park offers a wide range of opportunities for outdoor recreation. At our parks, you can enjoy a picnic, jog, go fishing, or find a quiet spot to get away from it all. Come see what we have, just for you!
One of the oldest municipal park systems in the country began when Richmond City Council voted in 1851 to acquire the 7.5 acres, now known as Monroe Park. Throughout the years Richmonders have enjoyed the serenity and beauty which our parks offer. Adventurous hikes into nature at James River Park, as well as urban fitness trails, tot lots, outdoor festivals and events are available for enjoyment by all. Today, the Department maintains and administers more than 57 parks with a total of more than 3,500 acres.
Popular parks include: Bryan Park whose azalea gardens draw hundreds of visitors each spring; Forest Hill Park former site of Forest Hill Amusement Park; Chimborazo Park, the site of the National Battlefield Park headquarters; and Byrd Park, which features a Fountain Lake, waterfowl on Swan Lake, the Dogwood Dell Amphitheater, the Carillon (World War I Memorial which is used for numerous special events and art shows), tournament-class public tennis courts, a Vita-course exercise trail, and a known gathering place for special events such as the annual New Year's Eve celebration.
Another Richmond favorite is Maymont Park, operated by the Maymont Foundation. A petting farm and zoo, acres of lush grounds and exotic gardens make this a popular tourist attraction.
