Enjoy the James River, but always respect its power! Even expert swimmers have lost their lives in the Mighty James. Obeying the City's river regulations and using common sense could save your life.
River Regulations
Click here for River Level OR
River Stage Forecast provided by the National Weather Service.
When the water is 5 feet or above, according to the Westham Gauge - everyone on the river must wear a life jacket.
When the water is 9 feet or above, according to the Westham Gauge - the river is closed for all recreational uses - unless you have a permit. FOR MOST PEOPLE, THIS MEANS IT IS AGAINST THE LAW TO BE IN THE WATER!
(Permits can be obtained from Fire Station No. 1 at 308 N. 24th St. by those who have Class 5 white water rapids experience and meet other requirements)
Signs are placed at all river access points to inform you of these conditions, or you can call Richmond's weather and river level hotline at 646-8228 to check on water levels.
