Department Officer of the Month -- June 2005

Officer Taylor Gainous
Third Precinct Officer Taylor Gainous has consistently proved himself to be a valuable asset to the Department since his graduation from the Academy in the summer of 2004. This latest honor is based on his outstanding performance during several key incidents in the month of June.
After being called to Albemarle Avenue on June 28, Officer Gainous was one of the first to encounter John Townsend Mustin, a young man who was wielding a knife and covered in blood after allegedly attacking his mother and killing another man. At risk to his own life, Officer Gainous was one of three officers who engaged in a lengthy struggle to subdue Mustin.
Gainous also has removed both guns and drugs from the City’s streets. While on routine patrol June 5, Gainous initiated a traffic stop that led to the seizure of a shot gun and several grams of crack.
Nine days later Gainous assisted another officer in apprehending a suspect wanted for attempted robbery and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Again, Gainous was responsible for taking a weapon, an SKS rifle, off the street.
On June 24, Gainous caught a male trespassing on school grounds. During a pat down Gainous discovered a fully loaded .32 caliber revolver and crack cocaine.
“Officer Gainous has worked diligently to remove illegal firearms and narcotics as well as apprehend violent criminals,” said Sgt. Timothy Wyatt, who nominated Gainous for Officer of the Month. “He genuinely cares about the community and the quality of life for Third Precinct residents.”
As Officer of the Month, Gainous has use of an Explorer for one month and was presented with the keys Thursday afternoon.
“Wow, this is cool! It even has a full tank of gas,” was Ganous’ comment as he took possession of the vehicle.
Gainous will also be taken to lunch by Chief Rodney D. Monroe, Assistant Chief Ray Tarasovic, Major David McCoy Commander David Martin.
Precinct Officers of the Month are: Officer Clyde Lindsay from First; Officer Shane Watson from Second; Officer William Nelson from Third; and Officer Kristine Thornton from Fourth.
