During the month of February, Fourth Precinct Sgt. Michael Talley
• Initiated a new alternative patrol targeting problem areas in sectors,
• Completed a gang prevention booklet for parents and teachers, and
Is partnering with the “I Have a Dream” Foundation to conduct a summer camp for 120 inner-city youths that encourages them to make good choices, grades and friends.
When FIRs began to trickle down, Sgt. Talley developed and initiated Sector Blitzes – a team concept where a sector officer is selected as team leader and allowed to plan and lead a 30-minute alternative patrol in a problem area in the sector, with emphasis on suspicious persons and activities.
Last month this initiative produced high visibility and additional alternative patrol numbers for each Sector Lieutenant. In addition it raised morale among the officers, who look forward to their turn as team leaders.
The numbers show the success of the Sector Blitzes, which resulted in:
• Nine misdemeanor arrests
• One narcotics seizure
• One felony warrant served
• Thirteen summonses issued and
• Nineteen field interviews.
Talley isn’t a “desk” sergeant. He also gets out on the streets. Last month he was on the scene of a homicide in Gilpin Court. He helped establish a perimeter and sequester potential witnesses, who were trying to leave the area. The Major Crimes sergeants noted and commended Talley and his officers for their perimeter and swift actions. With the assistance of their canvassing efforts and control of the crime scene, a suspect was quickly developed. Since then, an arrest in this homicide has been made.
Everything Talley does is in the spirit of teambuilding and community service. He initiated an Officer Appreciation Meal for goals met within the platoon. Talley also donated a large selection of current law enforcement books, magazine and handbooks to establish a reference library in Fourth Precinct’s Administrative Sergeant’s Office for fellow sergeants to use for research and study.
