During the month of May, First Precinct Sgt. Michael Rogers
• Managed a three-night initiative to calm crime in a neighborhood apartment complex,
• Assisted with an intensive homicide investigation and
• Worked to involve all midnight shift officers in addressing community concerns.
On each midnight shift tour First Precinct Sgt. Michael Rogers works to lead by example. He also challenges the officers at the precinct to identify problems and develop solutions.
One of Rogers’ officers identified the target area of the Fair Hills Apartment Complex, which has a history of individuals trespassing, distributing drugs and being disorderly.
Rogers organized midnight shift officers during the shift overlap, along with members of VCIT, (Violent Crime Impact Teams) for a strong presence in the apartment complex for a three-night operation.
During this initiative, officers logged 56 field interview reports, 77 hours of walking patrols and 155 citizen contacts. Officers seized two weapons, .65 grams of cocaine and 1.04 grams of marijuana.
By the third night, the majority of people moving about the complex were residents.
This is just one example of how Rogers empowers the officers he supervises to develop a plan of action and then organize and successfully execute the plan.
Last month Rogers also assisted with a homicide investigation on Dinwiddie Avenue. He supervised the crime scene and organized the separation and transport of witnesses to Headquarters. He also utilized sector officers to identify a person of interest.
In nominating him for Sergeant of the Month, Sector 111 Lt. James Laino simply describes Rogers’ interaction with officers this way: “He understands the importance of mentoring and leading.”
