During the month of November, Second Precinct Sgt. Herbert Byrd
• Conducted several roll call training exercises for the midnight shift officers,
• Provided updates regarding patrol tactics for successful crime reduction efforts, and
• Came in on his days off to ensure adequate coverage at the precinct and provide lieutenants with needed information.
Sgt. Byrd is a relatively new sergeant supervising a midnight shift comprising mostly newer officers. But that hasn’t stopped Byrd from being a guiding influence for his troops.
Byrd brings years of law enforcement experience to his sergeant duties from his career with the Sheriff’s Department, as a patrol officer himself, and as a detective in Major Crimes. And it’s no wonder because Byrd was the Major Crimes Detective of the Year in 2006.
All of these experiences help Byrd teach the new officers assigned to him.
Byrd’s adept use of these experiences as a sergeant also helped make him the Department’s Sergeant of the Month for November.
When it comes to crime scenes, Byrd’s detective experience also comes in handy. He maintains a calm demeanor and ensures the crime is secured, all procedures are followed, and all appropriate notifications are made.
