Public Works is organized around four primary service units:

Our primary responsibilities regarding services to external customers - citizens and businesses of the City of Richmond - involve transportation and cleanliness. That's why we often say that Public Works keeps Richmond looking good and on the go!

Mission Statement

Richmond Public Works will deliver services in a responsive, cost efficient and effective manner to citizens of the City of Richmond in support of the Mayor’s strategic plan, by a workforce that is diverse, committed, motivated and empowered.

Vision Statement

To maintain a nationally accredited Public Works Department that maintains the most cost efficient services to the citizens of Richmond, Virginia by providing a safe, clean and healthy environment by utilizing modern technology to ensure future growth and development throughout the city.

Code of Ethics

Employees of the Richmond Department of Public Works are ambassadors for the City and must adhere to the highest standards of conduct and service as outlined in the City’s mission statement and guiding principals. Every Department of Public Works employee, whether in a temporary, probationary or regular full time position, is expected to act in a professional manner at all times.
