City of Richmond Department of Public Works is a core municipal agency
serving a community of nearly 200,000 residents with more than 600 employees
and a $56 million operating budget.
According to our formal mission statement, Richmond Public Works is a
key partner in shaping a thriving community that is safe, clean and accessible.
The employees of Public Works will accomplish this mission by delivering
cost-effective and responsive programs, projects.
Public Works is organized around four primary service units: Engineering & Technical Services, Operations Management, Administrative and Support Services and Special Projects. Our primary responsibilities regarding services to external customers - citizens and businesses of the City of Richmond - involve transportation and cleanliness. That's why we often say that Public Works keeps Richmond looking good and on the go!
As a professional organization, we are constantly striving for improvements in our operations. In 2005, Richmond's Department of Public Works earned national accreditation from the American Public Works Association. This rigorous accreditation application process benchmarks our business processes against the best practices in the public works industry. Through accreditation, we can demonstrate that we are among the best public works organizations in the world. Richmond's Department of Public Works was only the 28th in the Nation and 2nd in Virginia to receive this recognition.
