The Department of Public Works is interested in addressing the difficult, confusing, and
circuitous routing found within Shockoe Bottom today.
Historically, this section of downtown is the oldest and there has never been a
comprehensive transportation study to address all of the transportation modes that
coexist in the area. We are interested in preventing additional pedestrian and other
vehicular accidents as well as making the transportation system’s operating
functions more intuitive and user-friendly for pedestrians, bicyclists, transit,
and vehicles in the Shockoe Bottom area.
The Department is interested and is looking for support and input from the
surrounding businesses, residents, city agencies, and visitors to the
Farmer’s Market and the surrounding Shockoe Bottom businesses. The Shockoe
Bottom District is one of the most historic parts of the City and pedestrian
safety is the key element in any decisions to be made regarding traffic flow.
The Stakeholders' Group in May 2004 issued a preliminary report and recommendations,
