The primary role of the Richmond City Sheriff’s Office is to protect and secure the Richmond City Jail, safeguard Richmond City Courthouses, and carry out the duties of the Civil Process Division.   In the event of a natural or manmade disaster, the Richmond City Sheriff’s Office is newly trained in National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) and emergency preparedness to assist in local and regional public safety efforts to maintain public order, to provide for public welfare and to safeguard hazardous materials, toxins and transport of medical supplies and medicines.

  • Approximately 26,000 people are processed through the Jail each year.

  • Built in 1964 to house 882 inmates, the Jail often houses over 1,500 inmates a day.
