The Training Academy strives to
provide high quality, cost-efficient programs that address the
training needs of the Richmond City Sheriff’s Office.
In-Service Training
The Department of Criminal Justice Service offers accelerated credit for
web-based in-service training.
A
deputy who participates in lecture type training in a classroom receives
one hour of credit for each hour in class. This credit is applied
towards the 40 hours required for a deputy’s recertification.
However, web-based training offers each officer four hours credit for
each hour spent on computer training. In 2006, 175 deputies are to
attend a total of 240 hours of web-based in-service training.
New Computer Training
began in
2006 with a new computer training partnership with the Richmond Police
Department offers employees new opportunities to advance in technology
and increase efficiency in the process.
Firearms Training
Built
in early 2006, from the ground up, by members of Staff and Support, the
F.A.T.S. System (Firearms Training System) was implemented into the
training curriculum. F.A.T.S. uses decision-making scenarios,
along with marksmanship skills building.
The value of this system is two-fold.

-
FATS helps deputies improve their
pistol marksmanship skills without paying for numerous instructors
and costly ammunition. The system graphically displays the
movement of the muzzle of a training weapon. This allows an
instructor to use computer analysis to identify performance
deficiencies and correct those deficiencies.
-
For the first time, deputies can receive “Use of
Deadly Force” decision-making training for deputies to practice
making such decisions prior to a potentially lethal force
confrontation.
