Second Responders

The Second Responders Unit was started in 1997 in response to the City's efforts to reduce crime and improve customer service. Social workers from the unit respond to any call when dispatched by 911 operators or when requested by officers at a scene. They interview the parties involved, conduct an assessment and determine what services are needed. They may refer the citizen to a specific Social Services program or to an outside agency. In situations where a child or family member is at risk, social workers will intervene immediately to ensure the child's and/or family's safety. Safety planning will be done as needed, and counseling may be provided immediately in order to resolve the parenting issue until the citizen can contact an agency worker during normal business hours.

For more information on the Second Responders Unit, please call (804) 646-3427 between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. daily including weekends and holidays. Second Responders can also be reached at the following police Customer Service Zones:
