Child and Family Services

Family Safety: The department provides initial and on-going assessments of risk to children pertaining to physical abuse, battering, neglect or exploitation. Services are provided to prevent further abuse or neglect, and may include court action to remove custody from a caretaker. Family preservation is a primary goal of these services. Child Protective Services, Family Violence Prevention, and the Second Responders Team are key programs for family safety.

Foster Care, Adoption and Foster Parent Training: The department provides for quality placement of children with an approved family or group home until a permanent placement can be achieved. Services include a full range of casework including treatment and coordination of community services for children who are abused or neglected. Service plans are developed with the goal of reuniting children with their families. Foster parent training educates foster parents about the various aspects of foster parenting to assure that they are capable of providing foster children with appropriate substitute care. Adoption services provide permanent homes for foster children in appropriate cases. Adoption workers conduct home studies on potential adoptive parents and attempt to match children with adoptive homes that meet the child's needs.
