Child Protective Services
Child Protective Services staff receives, investigates, and assesses reports of alleged child abuse and/or neglect for children under age 18. In order to qualify for child protective services, the alleged abuser must be the parent or caretaker of the child.
Through the program, City workers identify abused and neglected children and strive to provide a stable and safe environment. When possible, staff will work to preserve the family by enhancing the parent's ability to provide care. The program strives to prevent any further abuse or neglect, and to ensure protection for the children.
The alleged incident must have occurred in the city of Richmond, or the alleged victim must reside in the city of Richmond. A full range of services is available to the child under CPS care and his or her family including referrals for parenting classes, substance abuse treatment, counseling, medical assistance, financial assistance, housing assistance and mentoring programs.
For more information about Child Protective Services, or to report suspected child abuse or neglect, please call (804) 646-0438. (Reports may also be made to 1-800-552-7096.)
