Temporary Assistance to Needy Families - TANF
This program provides temporary financial assistance and employment-related services to enable families with children to become self-supporting. The family receives a monthly cash payment to meet their basic needs and enables children to be cared for in their own home or in the home of a relative.
The program ends the parent's dependency on government benefits by promoting job preparation, work and marriage. Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) also encourages the formation and maintenance of two-parent families, thus reducing the incidence of pregnancy outside of marriage. To be eligible, the family must be financially needy and pass the income screenings.
