During the month of September, Officer Nathan Huffman of Sector 213
• Led an initiative to eradicate a neighborhood gang,
• Handled 13 self-initiated calls, 26 radio calls, assisted other officers on calls and wrote eight field interview reports, and
• Contributed to a reduction in violent crime in the area, with property crime down 38% and total crime down 35%.
Officer Huffman received complaints from citizens about a group of juveniles in the area of Presson Boulevard and Gunn Street. He also noticed gang signs in the area.
While attending a community meeting he was told the group of juveniles would stand in the middle of the street and block vehicle passage. They also would sit on the front porches of residents, intimidating them to the point that they were afraid to come out of their homes.
Huffman discovered the group of juveniles causing these problems lived in the area, operating under the name B.O.E. Huffman was charged to lead a task force to eradicate this gang.
Through Huffman’s problem-solving and investigative efforts, seven B.O.E. members have been arrested for various offenses, including arson, felony vandalism, assault by mob, gang-related charges and robbery. The investigation is ongoing, with the assistance of the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office and the SID Gang Unit.
Citizens in the once troubled neighborhood thanked the officers for allowing them to once again sit on their porches and enjoy their neighborhood as they had in the past.
The September Officers of the Month for their respective precincts are Officer Daniel Burgess, First Precinct; Officer Gary Venable, Third Precinct; and Officer Ethan Rhodenizer, Fourth Precinct.
