Receive E-Mail Alerts on the James River

Individuals using the James River can now obtain more information about the safety of fishing, boating and swimming activities following heavy rains.

The City's new "River Alert" electronic system sends you an e-mail as a health precaution whenever a significant rain event results in a discharge of untreated stormwater overflow into the river.

During dry weather, combined sewer systems carry all the sanitary flow to the City's wastewater treatment plant. However, heavy rains add to the amount of flow going to the treatment plant and the excess flow is discharged directly into the river.
