Deck Construction in the City of Richmond

All decks constructed in the City are required to have building permits and inspections by City inspectors. To ensure a deck passes inspection, it should be constructed to adhere to the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code. Click here for a City Deck Construction Guide.

Anyone having a deck on their property should have the deck inspected to make sure it is properly constructed, maintained and is safe to use. Decks are outdoors and therefore are subject to deterioration, including wood rot and the corrosion of connections and fasteners causing them to loosen over time.

Starting November 12, 2008 the City will provide City inspectors at no charge to inspect and assist homeowners in evaluating their existing decks. Homeowners should call 3-1-1 to notify the inspection office that you are in need of a deck inspection.
