I believe that too many young kids are having sex.  I think your program can help me get the message across that you don’t have to have sex to have a relationship.

Here’s your opportunity to get involved. The City of Richmond’s Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative provides several opportunities for you to positively affect your school, community, church and neighborhood. With the right tools and information, you can help other youth resist peer pressure and make well - informed decisions about their sexuality. Ultimately, with your help, we will reduce teen pregnancy in the City of Richmond.

Here are things you can do…

  • talk to your parents about sex
  • ask questions about sex
  • talk to your friends about the importance of having safe sex
  • get involved in activities
  • set future goals
  • go to the doctor for regular health check-ups
  • eat well and get a lot of exercise

Here’s what you can do in schools…Become active

  1. Serve as a City of Richmond Peer Educator

City of Richmond Peer Educators serve as discussion leaders and conduct "Postponing Sexual Involvement" exercises.  Adolescents often are more open to messages, ideas, and behaviors from their peers than from adults. 

What you need to know about becoming a Peer Educator

1. Requirements for employment: 
you must  --

  • Be a high school student in grades ten through twelve
  • Be enrolled in the Richmond Public Schools

2. Personal Attributes:

  • Relates well to other teens
  • Represents as a role model whose overall behavior reflects the message of the Postponing Sexual Involvement Educational Series
  • Desires to be involved in teenage pregnancy prevention activities, especially the Postponing Sexual Involvement program
  • Feels comfortable speaking before a group
  • Readsand comprehends written material well
  • Maintains a minimum grade point average of 2.0
