
Purpose:

The purpose of the Speaker’s Bureau is to promote awareness about the issue of teen pregnancy prevention and gather public input. Speakers are to attend regular meetings of civic and faith groups, service organizations, neighborhood associations, and other types of meetings to raise awareness about the issue of teen pregnancy prevention.
Speakers:

Volunteers will be recruited and trained. The Speaker’s Bureau will initially be comprised of individuals who are members of the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Steering Committee. These individuals have strong communication skills and knowledge of teenage pregnancy prevention programs.
Sessions:

The presentations should last approximately 1 hour. Each presentation will consist of the following:
I. Introduction of Speaker Each speaker will have a short biography. They will be introduced to the audience or introduce themselves.
II. Review Fact Sheet Each audience member will receive a copy of “Facts about Teen Pregnancy in Richmond 2005”
Discuss the major data trends and field questions about the data.
III. History of Richmond Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy Speaker’s will distribute the Teen Pregnancy Prevention fact sheet which will provide an overview of the Mayor’s 2020 Vision for addressing Child and Adolescent Health and highlight the mission of the Initiative.
IV. Presenting the Documentary A. Speaker will provide background information about the video:
- The documentary was produced by the City of Richmond
- Acknowledge the contributions made by the many volunteers who appeared in the film
- Review disclaimer
- Highlight documentary primary target audience- adults
B. Show the documentary
C. After viewing the documentary, the following questions will be asked to stimulate discussion:
- Were there parts of the documentary that was particularly interesting to you?
- How is teenage pregnancy related to other youth risk taking behaviors?
- What impact does teenage pregnancy have on girls and their families, boys and their families?
- What were the messages shared by youth? Parents? Others?
- Do you feel it is important that public and private business, parents, schools, government, faith community leaders, youth services providers and others help to address this issue?
- What can you do to help address the issue of teenage pregnancy in our city?
V. Session Evaluation Speaker will distribute the evaluation and request that audience members complete the form and leave it in a designated place as they exit.
VI. Additional Resources The Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy Prevention tool kit which includes "Talk 2 Me" information, teen pregnancy prevention handouts, frequently asked questions, description of prevention programs and a list of all public awareness campaign resources will soon be available.
