Arthur Ashe Statue

Arthure Ashe Statue
The Arthur Ashe statue, commemorating the legendary tennis great, is the most recent addition to Richmond's famed Monument Avenue. The dedication and unveiling ceremony in July 1996 drew thousands of spectators for a celebration of Ashe's achievements as a humanitarian, scholar, and athlete. It marked the culmination of more than three years of work by Virginia Heroes Incorporated and artist Paul DiPasquale, sculptor and designer, who based the statue on Ashe's own vision.

Born in Richmond on July 10, 1943, Ashe later gained fame by winning Wimbledon and the U.S. Open and being twice-ranked No.1 in the world.

The Arthur Ashe statue, located at Roseneath and Monument avenues, is the first monument erected on Monument Avenue since 1929. The 1996 dedication ceremony was broadcast around the world.
